Island Muay Thai on Koh Tao

// October 8th, 2010 // No Comments » // Outside Venture, Sports

What’s up everyone? Tom here.
I’ve decided to take off and take a month long trip down south to Koh Tao. The island is world renown for it’s diving schools and beautiful beaches. But I came here to solely do muay thai for a month and get away from the rest of the world. It’s been just over a week already that I’m here and it’s been pretty intense this whole time. I’ve only done muay thai when I’m on holidays so to be totally immersed in it this time is really fun.

The team fully assembled on the Helipad on top of my building

In July of 2010, over a dozen Parkour/Freerunning enthusiasts traveled to Thailand for what has become an annual event. You would think that all the civil unrest concerning Thailand merely a month before would deter them from coming, but not this group of adventurers. This band of merry travelers included practitioners from England, Australia, France, and Germany, all of whom thought it appropriate to set up camp in my modest 2 bed room apartment. This was cause for considerable discomfort on my behalf, but was a small price to pay in exchange for the experiences we shared.
Over 4 weeks they traveled to almost every corner of the country, from top to toe. From Chiang Mai, to Ton Sai, even venturing into Cambodia. They moved through cities, temples, beaches, and forests, taking in all the sights and taking every new location as an opportunity to train and share their passion for movement.
This group, with a moderate grasp of the native tongue, quickly dubbed themselves TEAM FARANG, but i much prefer to refer to them as my Farang-tourage.

A visit to BKKBJJ – Bangkok Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club

// August 18th, 2010 // No Comments » // Outside Venture, Sports

One of the beautiful things about Bangkok is that there is something different around every corner. On this occasion the VENTURE team found themselves at the Bangkok Brazillian Jiu Jitsu Club, and we got a chance to participate in our first Jiu Jitsu class. Not only was it a grueling physical effort, but we quickly found that it was no sport for your simple dumb brute. Every movement is purposeful and strategic, with difficult technical maneuvers to match. All to often i would catch myself wearing a look of bewilderment on my face, as if i was asked to fight of bear and program the VCR at the same time. Unlike any martial art I’ve ever taken before, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is something you really have to jump in with both feet, and literally get elbow deep in the action. A real challenging experience.

Friendly Neighbourhood Dude

// June 19th, 2010 // No Comments » // Outside Venture, Sports

The other week I brought Tom out to my neighborhood so he could get some shots of me doing what i do. Our fabulous director was nice enough to whip together a quick edit so you could all see a bit more of what we did that morning.
It was looking to be a rainy day but with a bit of luck and lots of wishful thinking we manage to sneak in a quick play and get away with a few nice shots on Tom camera.
It’s almost certain that tom and I will be bringing lots more of our different skills to the show, and hopefully you’ll enjoy seeing us bring our love of photos and movement on other ventures round Thailand.

Photographing Parkour

I got the chance to catch Anan in his natural habitat today and went to photograph him doing some urban running. Unfortunately I only had the 85mm lens on me, so I wasn’t exactly able to capture the whole scene and show the surrounding architecture but we definitely got some nice shots of Anan doing jumps from building to building.

All in all, it was a great experience for me as it was a nice change from photographing models all made up and looking gorgeous to shooting Anan, all sweaty and almost completely careless about the camera. Movement is fun!
